Who Is My Mentor?

Posted by: | May 10, 2012 | No Comment |

When you sign up for the Student Blogging Challenge you get a mentor. When I went into my category there was no mentor. So now I know nothing about him/her. Maybe an interview will help.  I have a few questions for my mentor….

  • Who is my mentor?
  • What is your name?
  • What gender are you?
  • What do you like to do?
  • What are your hobbies?
  • How old are you?
  • Do you enjoy being a mentor?
  • What country do you live in?
  • What brought you into blogging?

Questions like this will help me get to know my mentor better. Do you have a mentor?

Fire Safety

Posted by: | May 2, 2012 | 1 Comment |

All the grade sevens from our school went to the fire hall a couple days ago. There were kids from two different schools there as well. We went to 5 different rotations on fire safety and how to handle fire situations responsibly. The first rotation was about fireworks and matches. We watched a video on how a guy was making a firework, and it blew up in his hand. He lost half a finger. In the second rotation we learned how to use a fire extinguisher. We got to use one too. It was fun putting the fire out! I learned that if the fire is above your height then you cannot use the extinguisher and you need to call 911 right away. In the third rotation we learned how to put out a kitchen fire caused by grease and heat. Pouring baking powder over the fire will suffocate the fire which will put it out.  In the fourth rotation a paramedic did a presentation on what happens when you don’t wear a helmet while riding your bike, scooter, or roller blades.  He told us about a guy who went on a bike ride early in the morning and fell off because a runner ran into him. He hit his head on the cement fracturing his skull and got knocked out. Three days later he pass away in the hospital. He didn’t even get to say goodbye to his family because he didn’t have any identification on him and they didn’t know who he was. The doctors say if he was wearing a helmet then he would have only had a sore wrist. That’s why your parents always tell you to wear one. Take wearing a helmet seriously. It can save your life. On the fifth rotation we watched a video about house fires. The video was really cool because they put cameras in the house so you could see the house on fire from the inside. Fire spreads really quickly and you don’t have a lot of time to get out. Most people think that it’s the fire that will kill you, but it’s the smoke that’s the worst.  Inhaling it will tighten your lungs and you will not be able to breathe. Stay low and make sure that you always have an escape route!

Magnificent Flower Headbands

Posted by: | April 26, 2012 | 2 Comments |

We are having an Entrepreneur Fair May 23! I am making flower headbands.  An Entrepreneur Fair gives kids a chance to learn how running a business works in case one day they decide to actually run one themselves. It didn’t take me very long to figure out what my product was going to be. I like the idea, and so does my teacher, but will my consumers? That’s what this survey is for…

Community Clean Up!

Posted by: | April 26, 2012 | No Comment |

On April 19, it was  the third annual Tim Horton’s community clean up. Over 10 000 students participated in it including ours. From the Comox Valley to Victoria kids were picking up garbage to help their community stay clean!

Our class found many different pieces of garbage including tubes, hoses, house siding, a toy car, an old water dispenser, and even a toilet seat! The one object that we didn’t bring home was the giant old rusty tractor. Too bad.

All though it was a bit cold outside, we still picked up a fair amount of garbage filling ten bags full! A 45 minute walk turned into an hour and a half walk.   If you participated in this event it would be great to hear  about your adventure.

Pack Your Bags!

Posted by: | April 26, 2012 | No Comment |

There are many wonderful places in the world. Some of them are very popular and are tourist attractions. Like the Great Wall of China, or the Eiffel tower.  I’d like to recommend some tourist attractions that you might want to visit in our province.

My favourite part about my hometown is Mount Washington. In the winter you can go skiing or snow boarding, and in the summer you can enjoy the views and bounce away on the bungee trampoline! I would enjoy to someday go on a picnic up there in the summer time. If you would like to find out more about this then here is a link to their website.

There are great beaches in B.C. One in particular is Tofino. I would say that it is one of the most beautiful beaches I have ever seen in my life. You can go kayaking, surf and much more. To read more about this visit their website. You have to visit there some day!

If you are looking for a fun, educational and exciting place to visit, then that’s Science World in Vancouver. It’s so fun you will never want to leave! You can experience stuff that you have not experienced before!

Located in Vancouver the same place as Science World is Playland! It’s a fun amusement park with all different kinds of rides. I have been there myself and my favourite ride is the corkscrew. It’s a thrilling roller coaster that will get your heart racing! There are more rides where that came from.

My last recommendation is a place that has every type of obstacle you can imagine. Wild Play! It’s located in Nanaimo on Vancouver Island. With different levels and heights you will be blown away by this course. Along with bungee jumping and the king swing. You’ll have to go and visit. What are some fun places in your city?

Gymnastics

Posted by: | March 9, 2012 | 1 Comment |

Some people have hobbies. Like scrap booking, making friendship bracelets and many other activities. Well, mine is gymnastics. Gymnastics is my favourite sport and always will be. I couldn’t picture my life without it. When I am there I feel happy and excited. I love the feeling of flying through the air, and swinging on a bar.  Gymnastics is probably the hardest sport in the world. It takes confidence, pride, courage, and everything else to be a gymnast. Here is a video to watch. Enjoy!

As you can tell I love gymnastics. It’s a sport that I will not give up, and go as far as I can with it. Never give up a dream.

What is you favourite hobby?

Every Day kids get bullied.  This February will not be a leap year! So on February 29th our school will be participating in pink shirt day. A day where we stand up for kids who get bullied. This year kids in our class have been writing poems about personal experiences. Sometimes when kids are being bullied they feel they have to keep it a secret. Some of them are scared that if they tell an adult, then the bully might come back even worse than they did before. Keeping secrets puts a lot of pressure on a kid. Being a bully is not something to be proud of, but some people can’t help it because they might have issues at home or out of school.

Our poems are based on the “I am just a boy” poem that a fourteen year old Canadian boy wrote when he was being bullied. I have made my own poem just like his…

I am just a girl
I am just a girl who deserves to be treated fairly
I am just a girl who didn’t realize how horribly other people are treated when it comes to being teased, being made fun of or judged on what they wear or look like
I am just a girl who hopes for bullying to end and help everyone feel like they belong
I am just a girl who promises to never be the person causing the problem
I am just a girl who wishes everyone else would make that promise too
I am just a girl who is waiting to make a change for the people who can’t stand up for themselves
I am just a girl who has hopes and dreams
I am just a girl who isn’t going to act like someone else just to fit in
I am just a girl who wants to feel like I belong in this world
I am just a girl who wants to enjoy my life and help others enjoy theirs too
I am just a girl.

When you were reading my poem I hope that you were asking yourself is being a bully the right thing to be?

Everything Pink!

Posted by: | February 28, 2012 | 2 Comments |

As you might have read from my last post, on February 29th it’s Pink Shirt Day! Pink Shirt Day is a day where we support kids who get bullied. Everybody in our school will be wearing anything that is pink. Pink shirts, bandannas, pants and more. Pink Shirt Day originated in Nova Scotia in 2007. When a boy came to school wearing a pink shirt. People stared, laughed, teased and even accused him of being gay. All because he wore a pink shirt to school. That day he went home devastated and didn’t want to go back to school. The next day he came to school and everybody was wearing pink. It had turned out that the kids in grade 12 had encouraged everybody to wear pink. They went to thrift stores in town and bought pink accessories, and brought them to school for people to wear. They chatted over Facebook and MSN all of the other social networking sites so that people would know to wear a pink shirt to school. We now call that day Pink Shirt Day! I think that this day is important because this gives kids a chance to stand up for themselves if they are being bullied or have been bullied before. Usually when it is getting close to pink shirt day we learn about what types of bullying there are, and what they are called. Here are some of the types of bullying.

  • Cyber- on the Internet
  • Social- in a group
  • Verbal- using strong words
  • Physical- hands and feet

When you were younger you were usually taught to use your wits, walk away, ignore it, talk it out, seek out help. Now a days at this age you wouldn’t use your wits because you think that you have out grown it, but really you haven’t. Using your wits is always something to can use.

If you ever see someone being bullied you should tell a teacher or an adult. Stand up for that person, don’t be a bystander.

Looking for a good book?

Posted by: | February 24, 2012 | No Comment |

Are you looking for a good book? If you are then I have one just for you. This book is full of fear, excitement,  joy, suspense and much more! Among the Hidden is a book that you will not be able to put it down, and it’s only the first novel of the series! You might recognize the authors name Haddix. She has written many books before that are quite similar to the one that I’m reading. This book was suggested to me by a friend who is a big reader. She said that it was one of her favourite books. It’s now one of my favourite books too! Here are some things that people have said about this book:

“Readers will be captivated by Luke’s predicament and reactions to it”

“This is a chilling and intelligent novel”

“An ALA best book for young adults”

In class we have been working on trailers for our books. It took some work, but it was worth it. Hope you enjoy!

Top 5 Blogs To Visit

Posted by: | February 24, 2012 | No Comment |

Hello fellow bloggers! I have decided to do a choice post based on blogs that I recommend. The first blog that I would suggest to you is our class blog. If you would like to learn about what we are doing in class then this is the one to go to. It also has fun posts to read and comment on! My second suggestion is Greyson’s blog if you want to learn about history or social studies then it’s the blog to visit! My third suggestion would be Kaylee’s blog. Her blog is one of my favourite blogs. She has very creative posts and sometimes even quizzes!  And for the fourth one that would have to be recommended is Celina’s blog. Her blog is a fun blog to visit. Last but not least  Huzzah. Just like our class blog it is very creative, and up to date on what they are working on in class.

Please recommend some other great blogs that you may know of and enjoy so we can enjoy them too!
